As a queer individual who grew up in the Church, I've always wondered: "What would happen if the Church recognized the fact that queer individuals were a central part of the biblical narrative? What effect would this have on a personal, local, and global level? How much safer and included would the LGBTQ+ community be?" This is what made me dive into the biblical relationship between David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel. After a lot of research, I discovered that many biblical and Hebrew scholars, theologians, and those who study the Antiquities, agree on the fact that their relationship was more than just platonic. It was romantic. Marital. Which is what got me started on this screenplay. I used the biblical narrative of 1 Samuel like a guidepost, hitting certain events, but mostly filling in the space between, where David and Jonathan's love would have developed and blossomed. Stylistically, the film is a blend of indie queer romance & historical epic. "Maurice" meets "Gladiator". "Call Me By Your Name" meets "Lawrence of Arabia". "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" meets "Troy".
