THE MAD QUEEN AND LAVENDER FARM came as a title before the story arrived. Touring a lavender farm near Sequim, Washington, our guide warned us to steer clear of a bee hive because "it has a mad queen." I talked to our beekeeper friend Jo about that, and she taught me just what that meant. The characters and narrative followed.
