After thirty years of painful separation, a mother, father, and mentally disabled son attempt to reconcile in the Canadian wilderness, as they try to catch SCARBACK, a massive Northern Pike with an ugly wound on his back. Looking for redemption, the father wants to win the Million to One fishing contest sponsored by the Freshwater Angler, a national fishing magazine, hoping that winning the contest will rectify his years of cowardly alienation from his wife and son, but a series of heart wrenching events complicate his plans.
