Race Across America tells the true story of Horatio Nelson Jackson, an eccentric 31 year old Vermont automobile enthusiast who makes an audacious, impulsive $50 bet, at a Gentleman's Club in San Francisco, that he can become the first person to drive an automobile across the United Sates. Accompanied by Sewall Crocker, a shy techno-geek mechanic, and Bud the Bulldog, Horatio sets out in a used cherry-red 1903 Winton Touring Car named "Miss Vermont." Facing countless setbacks and adventures along the way, including run-ins with the rival Packard team led by the ruthless Thomas Fetch, Horatio perseveres for 65 days over unpaved roads and rugged terrain, and despite countless breakdowns, losing his money, and dearly missing his sweet wife, he ultimately becomes the first person to drive an automobile from coast to coast.
