About

The LAUNCH is a Million Dollar Screenplay Competition for college students with the mission to inspire the next generation of great screenwriters. The LAUNCH will enable one talented screenwriter to realize their dream by having their screenplay made by Hollywood producers as a feature film, with a budget of at least $1,000,000 USD. Plus, the top eight finalists will be awarded a total of $100,000 USD in education grants and other prizes.

The LAUNCH: Million Dollar Screenplay Competition Official Rules

Thanks for your interest in The LAUNCH Screenwriting Contest (the "Contest"), your chance to use your

screenplay writing skills for an opportunity for your screenplay to be produced as a feature film with a

budget of approximately $1,000,000 USD! Please read these rules carefully. By entering the Contest, you

are acknowledging and representing that you have read and fully understand all of these official rules

(the "Rules") and that you agree to all obligations and requirements identified in the Rules.

 

Sponsor

This Contest is sponsored by JRU Studios, LLC ("JRU Studios" or "Sponsor"). 

 

Prizes

There are a total of eight (8) prize packages that will be made available for entrants selected as potential

winners that meet all eligibility requirements. After providing all required documentation, eligible

entrants finishing in the top eight (8) (each a "Winner") will receive a grant in the identified amount

below corresponding to their place in the Contest (each a "Grant") that will be paid by Sponsor to the

Winner's educational institution as a payment toward the Winner's tuition. In the event a Winner has

graduated, is no longer enrolled in an educational institution, or if the Winner's remaining tuition is

already covered by other scholarships, grants, or other payments, the Grant shall be paid as a cash prize

amount in the form of a check to the Winner as identified on the submission. Alternatively, and at the

Sponsor's option to be exercised in the Sponsor's sole discretion, Sponsor may choose to provide

payment as a cash prize in the form of a check to the Winner identified on the submission. Additional

prizing details below.

- 1st Place Grand Prize: The winner’s screenplay will be produced as a feature film with a budget of

approximately $1,000,000 USD, as well as receive a $50,000 Grant, representation from a Hollywood

Talent Agent and Literary Manager (if the Winner is more than one person, they will be represented as a

writing team and not individually), feedback from the Judging Panel and the following: a 12-Month

subscription to the SAVE THE CAT!® Story Structure Software (ARV $99.95), all the SAVE THE CAT!® best

Eligibility

- All participants must be at least 18 years of age, as of February 1st, 2019.

- All participants must be a student and actively enrolled and attending an accredited two-year, four-

year university/college or graduate school program anywhere in the world as of February 1st, 2019.

 Proof of enrollment must be provided when submitting script(s) and/or upon request by Sponsor

(continuing education classes do not count towards eligibility).

- All participants must not be a member of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and/or any other writer's

guild/union.

- All participants must not have been paid professionally for their screenwriting services for feature films

and/or television.

- All participants must not be currently represented by a talent agent or manager for their feature film

writing services.

- Employees, officers and directors of Sponsor, its parents, subsidiaries, and affiliated companies,

advertising, promotion or production agencies, Web masters/suppliers (and their IRS dependents,

immediate family members (spouse, parents, children, siblings) and individuals residing in their same

household, whether or not related) are not eligible to participate.

- Provided that all other eligibility requirements are met, all persons from anywhere in the world are

eligible; however the screenplay submitted must be in English (occasional scenes with subtitles are

acceptable).


- All participants are responsible for ensuring that their submissions meet the following requirements:

- All screenplays submitted must be submitted in standard screenplay format, font, spacing and

margin utilizing one of the commonly accepted screenwriter software programs and must be

submitted electronically as a PDF or it will not be eligible.

- The submitted screenplay must not be encumbered by any obligation to, or any option held by,

a third party prior to or at the time of submission.

- Screenplays must not have been previously optioned, sold, licensed or produced as a live stage

production, theatrical motion picture, television or online program.

- Any submitted screenplay that becomes optioned, published, produced or purchased after the

time of submission is no longer eligible.

- There is no preference regarding title page content. Title and name of writer would suffice.

- Adaptations are ineligible unless the underlying rights are owned by the writer or the work is in

the public domain.

- Page limit requirements are between 85 and 130 pages.  Screenplays longer than 130 pages

are not eligible.

- Participant acknowledges that Sponsor and Competition Entities may have motion pictures, television

programs, and other creative materials in development or production that include ideas, concepts,

plots, characters, settings, and themes similar to Participant's Screenplay and that Participant will not be

entitled to any compensation or right to negotiate with Sponsor because of any such similarities.

Nothing in these Official Rules or related materials shall create an implied or express contract to

compensate Participants for their screenplays, except as specifically described in these Official Rules.

- All material submitted to other competitions or contests are eligible.

- There are no requirements as to when the material was written.

- For submissions submitted by a writing team, all members of the team must meet the eligibility

requirements set forth in the Rules. If any single member is ineligible, the entire writing team is

ineligible and the submission is void.

 

Rules

- Submissions are accepted via electronic submission on the www.launchscreenplay.com website only,

between midnight PST on February 1st, 2019 and 11:59 pm PDT on April 30th, 2019.

- The entry fee for each screenplay is $20 until the early deadline on February 28th, and then $30 until

the regular deadline on March 31st, and then $40 until the final deadline on April 30th.

- There is no limit to the number of screenplays you may submit. Each screenplay will require its own

entry fee.


- Entries must be received on or before the deadlines and submission fee payment must be made in full

at time of the submission. All entry fees are non-refundable.

- All submitted material must be original, and all rights must be owned solely and written only by the

individual submitting the screenplay, or only by individuals submitting the screenplay as part of a writing

team.

- Material must be submitted by the writer(s) of the screenplay. Material written by writing teams must,

at the time of submission, credit all writers on the title page, providing electronic signatures of all of the

writers, and providing the team's election of allocation of percentage of credit that will be used to

distribute any prizes among the team members.

- If a writing team is chosen as a Winner, prizes will be distributed according to the percentages

provided by the team in the submission. Each team is responsible for ensuring all team members have

agreed to and electronically signed the submission.

- It is recommended that original material be registered with the WGA or the U.S. Copyright Office

before submitting to any competition, however we do not require registration.

- All ownership and rights to the scripts submitted to this Contest remain with the original rights holders,

except that in order to be eligible to receive the grand prize, the entrant(s) must assign all ownership

rights in the submission to JRU Studios, LLC.

- Finalists will be required to sign and return within seven (7) business days of receipt a notarized

Affidavit of Eligibility and any other documents that a Sponsor, or any associated entity or agent acting

on a Sponsor's behalf, may require before receiving prize.  The Affidavit of Eligibility will require Winners

to option for a period of time, or in the case of the grand prize winner, sell and transfer the copyright in

the screenplay to Sponsor or a third-party to be selected by Sponsor in its sole discretion.

 

Screenplay Judging

Screenplays will be judged by scoring on the following attributes: (1) story; (2) creativity; (3) character

development; (4) voice originality; and (5) honest emotion. The judging process will be conducted as

follows, with the foregoing criteria applied after each round of reading and evaluation:

- 100% of scripts receive one (1) full read, evaluation and scoring.

- The top 25% of the total scripts received, based on evaluation and scoring will move to the next round

of the competition and will receive an additional full read, evaluation and scoring.

- The top 40% of the scripts based on evaluation and scoring from the previous round will receive an

additional full read, evaluation and scoring.

- The top 50% of the scripts based on evaluation and scoring from the previous round will receive an

additional full read, evaluation and scoring.


- The 25 scripts with the highest scores after the four (4) rounds of evaluation and scoring will then be

evaluated by The LAUNCH’s judging panel, who will select the top eight potential Winners, subject to

verification of eligibility and required documentation.

 

Notification

Entrants selected as potential top 25 finalists will be notified by email in June, 2019 and will be required

to submit further information and documentation to assist in the verification of eligibility. Any entrant

may be deemed ineligible at the sole discretion of a Sponsor.  Winner announcements are expected to

begin in July 2019, but may be delayed in the Sponsor's sole discretion. Possible finalists will be required

to sign and return within seven (7) business days of receipt a notarized Affidavit of Eligibility and a

Release and Indemnification and any other documents requested by or on behalf of a Sponsor before

receiving any prize. Failure to respond to the initial notification within ten (10) calendar days or a return

of notification as undeliverable will result in disqualification. We reserve the right to amend these Rules

at any time.

 

Copyright and Ownership

Sponsor and any other associated entity, employee or agent associated with the Contest claims no

ownership to any original screenplay submitted to this Contest unless and until a potential finalist

submits the required documentation to be eligible as a finalist, winner, or grand prize winner.

 

Publicity

Except where prohibited by law, participation in the Contest constitutes each entrant's consent to the

use by Sponsor, or its authorized agents, of entrants' names, likenesses, image, photographs, voice,

and/or personal information for promotional purposes in any media now known or hereafter

discovered, worldwide, in perpetuity without further payment, consideration, or prior notice, review, or

approval. All uses of an entrants' information are in accordance with our Privacy Policy, which is

available at www.launchscreenplay.com

 

REFUND POLICY

ALL ENTRY FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

Entry Conditions and Release

BY ENTERING THE CONTEST YOU ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU HAVE READ AND AGREE TO THESE RULES

AND CONDITIONS. You hereby release and hold harmless Sponsor, its subsidiaries, parents and affiliated

entities, prize contributors, judges, screenplay readers, and any other organizations responsible for

administering, advertising or promoting the Contest or otherwise associated with the Contest, and every

one of their respective members, directors, employees, agents and representatives (collectively, the

"Released Parties") past and present from and against any and all claims, expenses, and liability,

including but not limited to damages and negligence to property and persons including, but not limited

to, invasion of privacy, defamation, slander, libel, violation of right of publicity, copyright, infringement

of trademark or other intellectual property rights relating to a participant's entry or submission,

participation in the Contest and/or acceptance or use or misuse of any prize; and further indemnify,

defend and hold harmless Sponsor and its agents and employees from and against any and all claims,

expenses, and liabilities (including reasonable attorneys' fees) relating to an entrant's participation in


the Contest and/or entrant's use or misuse of any prize. ENTRY TO THIS CONTEST IS VOID WHERE

PROHIBITED or restricted by any Federal, State, Local, or other law. Voided entries will be refunded.

Before any entrant is eligible to become a finalist, Winner, or otherwise receive any prize, the entrant

must provide all requested information, documentation, and all signed documents in order to establish

eligibility.  Entrants are responsible for any and all tax attributable to prize winnings awarded under the

contest.

IN NO EVENT WILL RELEASED PARTIES BE RESPONSIBLE OR LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES OR LOSSES OF

ANY KIND, INCLUDING DIRECT, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES

ARISING OUT OF AN ENTRANT'S PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST OR USE OF A PRIZE.

WITHOUT LIMITING THE FOREGOING, ALL PRIZES ARE AWARDED "AS IS" AND SPONSOR MAKES NO

REPRESENTATIONS OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, CONCERNING THE

PERFORMANCE OF ANY PRIZE EXCEPT FOR ANY WARRANTY AVAILABLE FROM THE MANUFACTURER OF

THE PRIZE. 

SOME JURISDICTIONS MAY NOT ALLOW LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSION OF LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL OR

CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES OR EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, SO SOME OF THE ABOVE

LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO EVERY PARTICIPANT. CHECK LOCAL LAWS FOR ANY

RESTRICTIONS OR LIMITATIONS REGARDING THESE LIMITATIONS OR EXCLUSIONS.

Force Majeure

Sponsor is under no obligation to continue the Contest, distribute any prizes, shall not be deemed to

have violated these Rules, and shall not otherwise be liable or responsible to any entrant or other third-

party for any failure or delay in fulfilling or performing any term of the Rules or Contest when and to the

extent such failure or delay is caused by or results from acts or circumstances beyond the reasonable

control of Sponsor.
